Creamy Shawarma Recipe: A Tasty Twist on a Classic Dish


Shawarma is a popular Middle Eastern street food, known for its flavorful marinated meat, usually served in a wrap. This creamy shawarma recipe adds a delicious twist with a rich, tangy sauce that elevates the dish to a whole new level. Here’s how you can make it at home.


Ingredients:


For the Shawarma:


500 grams chicken breast or thighs, sliced thinly


2 tablespoons olive oil


2 tablespoons lemon juice


3 garlic cloves, minced


1 teaspoon ground cumin


1 teaspoon paprika


1 teaspoon ground coriander


½ teaspoon ground turmeric


½ teaspoon ground cinnamon


½ teaspoon salt


½ teaspoon black pepper

For the Creamy Sauce:

½ cup Greek yogurt or mayonnaise


2 tablespoons tahini


1 tablespoon lemon juice


1 garlic clove, minced


Salt and pepper to taste



Instructions:


1. Marinate the Chicken: In a large bowl, combine olive oil, lemon juice, minced garlic, and all the spices (cumin, paprika, coriander, turmeric, cinnamon, salt, and pepper). Add the sliced chicken and mix well to ensure the meat is fully coated. Cover and let it marinate for at least 30 minutes, or overnight for deeper flavor.



2. Cook the Chicken: Heat a skillet or grill pan over medium-high heat. Add the marinated chicken and cook for about 6-8 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the chicken is cooked through and has a nice golden color.



3. Prepare the Creamy Sauce: In a small bowl, whisk together the Greek yogurt or mayonnaise, tahini, lemon juice, minced garlic, salt, and pepper until smooth.



4. Assemble the Shawarma: Spread the creamy sauce on a flatbread or pita, then layer with the cooked chicken. Add fresh toppings like lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, and onions if desired. Wrap or fold the bread, and your creamy shawarma is ready to enjoy!





Tips:


For extra flavor, grill the chicken for a slight char.


Adjust the sauce’s thickness by adding a bit of water or more yogurt, depending on your preference.
